Yippee! It's a Yellow Day!

Today was definitely a Yellow Day, full of joy and happiness!

I found a Damsel fly while gathering grass for the geese this morning and got a quick pic.
It was picture day at school, so I drove over and took my turn at a camera shot. As I was leaving Alicia was just puling in with the boys. She had Josh and Jordan as well.

From there I drove to Rocklin to pick up an order from Mercurius. I was quite excited about this one. I just discovered they carry left handed scissors and I ordered 2 different pair for Owen. I also got a beginners handwriting practice book for him, a poetry and a music composition book for BJ.

It seems like every time I go through the catalog I find something new. Then when I place an order for a customer I just add that to the order.

This evening I prepared for BJs lesson tomorrow. There is so much to choose from and so little time! It is not fair!

Fall is gently kissing the air so that we are feeling a little temperature drop. What a difference a week makes!

Yes, this has been a FantasticYellow Day!

The Rhythm of a Family Meal

Yellow Rhythm Wednesday
A Food Journey

Take your child on a food journey while you partake in your meals together.

  • Ask them if they know where the food they eat comes from?
  • How is it grown?
  • Who grows it?
  • How does it get to the store and then to your kitchen?
  • Was it grown in your own garden?
  • Did you help plant the seeds, cultivate and harvest it?
  • If so, talk about what you learned and how it felt to take a seed to a food you can share with the family.
Children develop a new appreciation for food if they can have a little garden patch to tend on their own during the growing season.
They can have a sense of pride knowing they have helped to grace the table with all kinds of vegetables.
This can be an excellant opportunity to teach our children about the importance of being organic and how it affects the world we live in.

The benefits of organic gardening are not only that it is not only a healthier option, but it is cheaper as well. However, for young ones, gardening organically can be frustrating at times. Certain plants can make organic growing less frustrating.

With Spring in mind here are some suggestions of some easy plants for the young organic gardener to get started with.

Rhubarb and Mint
Rhubarb is easy to grow, and can often be found wild. The leaves are poisonous, but the stems tart and tasty.
Under good conditions, mint grows well and will pop up year after year. Gardeners who want to move on to other herbs might have a hard time actually getting rid of their mint.

Garlic and Basil
Like other leafy herbs, basil grows well indoors and out. Forgetting to water does not spell the end of a basil-growing endeavor. The wilted plant is often able to perk up with a healthy dose of water and a few days of sunlight.
Garlic likewise does well in the absence of a gardener’s care. In addition, it is used as a natural pesticide and fungicide, making it a staple for experienced organic gardeners as well.

Pumpkins
Bigger is seldom better in the world of inexperienced growers, but a few simple steps can make pumpkins one of the easier plants to grow organic. They respond well to soil mixed with compost and do not need to be watered often. Tricks like placing straw under maturing pumpkins to keep them off of the dirt go a long way towards a successful season.

Radishes and Carrots
Radishes are forgiving of imperfect weather and inconsistent watering. Pests find them attractive, but lightweight garden row covers keep these bugs at bay.
Carrots perform even better in sunny, mildly dry spots. This vegetable can maintain its vitamin content and sweet taste even if it does not grow to its full potential.

Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes do well in soil that is not fertilized. There is no need to buy seeds, simply cut the slips (sometimes known as eyes) out of an old potato and plant them in the garden.

Peppers
Most species of pepper respond well to sunlight and warm weather and attract relatively few pests.

Rosemary and Fennel
Fennel is considered both a vegetable and a herb. It is not difficult to grow and is a popular addition to organic gardens because it attracts ladybugs, which are natural predators of some of gardens’ most insidious pests.
Rosemary is a delicate herb once it is harvested, but it can also grow quite well in a pot like many herbs do with only basic watering and access to sunshine. It is possible to salvage a neglected rosemary plant by giving it a few intensive watering and sunshine sessions.

(I did not take these pictures, I captured them from an organic site)
We are the caretakers of our planet, and it is our job to teach our children to carry on with this important task.

Have a cheerful, joyful Yellow Rhythm Wednesday!

Yellow Rhythm Wednesday Sets the Tone for Mealtime

Yellow Rhythm Wednesday brings peace and rhythm to the week. It’s a gentle reminder that the week is half gone, but not over yet.

Breathe deep and remember that childhood is only a heartbeat long and everything you do counts.

Mealtime is an excellent opportunity to create inspiration and establish traditions that carry into a lifetime of lifetimes. What a delightful time to memorize short poems, recite verses together or to sing songs you learned as a child. Your children will learn them just by hearing you sing them day to day.
When I would visit my sister’s family I would often be treated with their special evening celebration of each family member sharing their success of the day. One would start and all would listen, knowing they each would have their turn. It was a beautiful way for each family member to share with the others and it gave each person the opportunity to acknowledge the other accomplishments.

A few moments of silence around the table can be worth a thousand words. Silence is especially effective at the end of an arduous day. Light a candle, hold hands, observe the silence, and say a prayer. This is a peaceful, calming way to set the rhythm of the meal.
Meal times can also be a lovely time to share favourite scriptures from the Bible, as well as letting others in the family hear why that scripture or scriptures has touched you.

Rhythm Wednesdays are a Yellow Day!

Today is a Yellow day.
Wednesday is the middle of the week still a time of joy and energy.
Yellow is the colour of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Use yellow to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings.

How the colour yellow affects us mentally and physically:
* Mentally stimulating
* Stimulates the nervous system
* Activates memory
* Encourages communication

Rhythm Wednesday:
There is a wonderful book called "Seven Times the Sun" that helps you to guild your child through the rhythms of the day. There are many ideas that help you to show your child how to honor ordinary moments and bring balance, joy and harmony to your family!
-----
The Heartbeat of the Day
There is rhythm running through every thing within creation. It is an eternal heartbeat. Sometimes this rhythm gets lost in the clutter and chaos of today.
It is important to all of us, especially our children to uncover it and let it sound over the earth and throughout the cosmos! We need to let it restore harmony to the rhythm of nature, the rhythm of peace among all peoples, the rhythm of human dignity and equality.
The rhythm of family is essential to restoring the rhythm of the world.

Rhythm is not a mindless routine.
Rhythm is a mindful awakening to the blessing we may find in our daily acts.
So many of us race through the day. Our mornings are harried and filled with the need to get from point A to point B. We put food in front off our families and scarf down our own as we rush through the morning. Imagine what it would be like though to create the time to gather around the breakfast table. No one reading the paper instead everyone is reading each others faces. Reuniting after a night's rest, sharing with each other.

Within the flow of rhythm, there is time and space to know and see. When you think of how many children are raised today within dysfunctional homes. Their lives are filled with inconsistency and disappointment, a norm for them. Contrast that with a world filled with children provided with an environment of stability and health from which they could learn to trust the world and their personal perceptions of it. These children would grow up compassionate and strong, able to meet the inconsistencies and conflicts that will challenge them in lives.

Guiding our children through the circle of the day will help them to know that there is a Grand Creator that supports them and who is loving and dependable. Evidence of this is seen in the rising of the sun ech morning, the stars coming out at night, the circle of the family gathering around a meal, the circle of childhood games.

If we can learn to move through the rhythm of the day we help to hallow out a place for our children to find acceptance and joy. When our children understand that we celebrate their lives, it will be natural for them to do so.

Simple Rituals to Celebrate the Morning
Think of alternative ways to wake your child as opposed to the alarm clock or a loud wake up call. Something gentle, soothing, perhaps chimes, a flute, a soft hymn, any gentle sound to celebrate the awakening.

As your child drifts from the world of dreams, give them a few moments to slowly readjust to the wakening state and get both feet firmly planted on the ground.
Respect the time your child needs for this readjusting.

May your mornings prove to be inspiring and filled with gentle memories that your children will carry in their hearts forever!

Colours and Activities of the Day

I mentioned that I wanted to bring an order or theme to my blog. I have worked and tweaked on a pattern to follow and think I have come up with something that will work.

Munchie Monday:
Let's start the week off with a Healthy Delicious Snack that is also a great interactive between parent and child. The recipes I will be sharing will be from the "Kinder-Krunchies Healthy Snack Recipes for Children" book that I have had forever. It was written by Karen Jenkins.
There are enough recipes in it to share with this blog for at least a year.
Let your little one do as much of the work as he or she is capable of. Remember that the more they do for themselves the more they will learn. This includes clean as you go and final clean up. Children are actually much more capable than we give them credit for.

Monday is a RED day.
I think that is a good choice for a Mon.
Red has more personal associations than any other colour. Recognized as a stimulant, red is inherently exciting.
What a great colour to begin the week with!

How the colour red affects us mentally and physically:
* Increases enthusiasm
* Stimulates energy
* Encourages action and confidence
* A sense of protection from fears and anxiety
----------------------------------------------------
Daring Tuesday:
I will be referring to "The Dangerous Book for Boys" and "The Daring Book for Girls". Both books are filled with fun activities and information that has entertained children for centuries!

Tuesday is an Orange day.
Tuesday is still the beginning of the week, full of energy and joy.
Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow.
Orange embraces enthusiasm, encourages creativity, stimulates fascination, evokes determination, and is associated with success.

How the colour orange affects us mentally and physically:
* Stimulates activity
* Stimulates appetite
* Encourages socialization
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Home School Thursday:
Thurs are my homeschooling day with my grandson. Currently we are studying astronomy. We are in the final chapter before moving on to Earth Science.
I will refer to "Children at Play" for articles an information on fostering child development.

Thursday is a Green day.
By Thursday the week is calming down.
Green is the colour of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, and freshness.
Green has great healing power. It is the most restful colour for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance.

How the colour green affects us mentally and physically:
* Soothing
* Relaxing mentally as well as physically
* Helps alleviate depression, nervousness and anxiety
* Offers a sense of renewal, self-control and harmony
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nurturing Friday:
I will pick a bird for the week and see what I can find out. My goal is to increase my own personal knowledge of birds and maybe yours as well.
I will refer to "Beyond the Rainbow Bridge" for articles and information on Nurturing our children from birth to seven.

Friday is a Blue day.
A perfect colour for Friday the last day of the work week.
Blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness.

How the colour blue affects us mentally and physically:
* Calming and sedate
* Cooling
* Aids intuition
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sagacious Saturday:
I have a book called Indian proverbs that I thought would be fun to share a proverb a week from.

Saturday is a Indigo day.

Saturday, a day to relax, create, center oneself.
Indigo is the colour of infinity. Used for healing, sleep, inner harmony and rest.
Indigo relates to self responsibility, for one's own life; responsibility to oneself.
Indigo is related to being highly intelligent, gifted/talented, creative, intuitive, associated with a strong self esteem and sense of belonging in the world.

How the colour indigo affects us mentally and physically:
* Creative
* Restful
* Aids in responsibility
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Environmental Sunday:
This is a wonderful day to reflect on this wonderful gift we have been given by our Creator, the Earth. Teaching our children how to take care of the environment and will help to set the tone for the coming week. I love the book "Earthways", Simple environmental activities for young children and will be sharing wonderful ideas I have found within its pages.

Sunday is a Purple day.
Sunday the last day of the weekend, the first day of the week.
Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, and mystery.
Purple embodies the balance of red simulation and blue calm. This dichotomy can cause unrest or uneasiness unless the undertone is clearly defined at which point the purple takes on the characteristics of its undertone. A sense of mystic and royal qualities, purple is a colour often well liked by very creative or eccentric types.

How the colour purple affects us mentally and physically:
* Uplifting
* Calming to mind and nerves
* Offers a sense of spirituality
* Encourages creativity

I think this is going to be a beautiful way to guide my blog!
Colourful, and filled with the love and energy of children.

Well I missed Munchie Monday this week. I guess I will have to make it up next week. The days just slid by since I got back from my son's last Tues. I should have been home on Mon. but Shane pleaded and then cried. What is a grandma to do? I stayed.
I had not seen him all winter and he had grown about 4 inches. Fri. we played and enjoyed one another's company, Sat. he had his piano recital.

Sun he had his last skiing lesson. I did not go into the mountains with them. I would have spent the whole time in the lodge, so I stayed at home with Cher.
I arrived home Tues. to a back log of chores.
Thurs. was my Homeschooling day with another one of my grandsons. We spent a good deal of the day watching as the egg he began incubating 21 days earlier began to hatch. That afternoon Sparky was born.

Since that day I have been attending to urgent family matters.
Next Mon. we have a school Field trip to Alcatraz. I am so excited. I have always wanted to go there. It has always interested me since I watched "The Birdman from Alcatraz" many years ago.
I will take pictures and create a slide show with Flickr to share.
